Start with what you actually want from the evening
Salzburg sells its Mozart in several forms, and they are genuinely different nights out — not the same concert at different prices. The honest question is what you want the evening to be. Is it the music itself, played beautifully in a historic room? Is it dinner and entertainment rolled into one? Is it a view and an occasion? Mirabell: for the concert itself
If the music is the point, the Schlosskonzerte Mirabell is the pick. You get a full chamber concert — around an hour and forty minutes of Mozart and Haydn — in the gilded Marble Hall where the boy Mozart actually performed, a room of only about 130 seats where the sound is close and un-amplified. It is the most beautiful room of the options and, at roughly €42–46, the best sound for your money. Nothing is diluting the music: no dinner service, no costumes, no gimmick. This is the connoisseur's choice, and also the one most first-timers end up happiest with.
St Peter, the Fortress and the Residence: when something else matters more
The Mozart Dinner Concert at St Peter Stiftskulinarium — set in the dining hall of what is often called Europe's oldest restaurant — pairs a three-course period dinner with costumed singers over about three hours; choose it when you want dinner and a show as a single evening, and don't mind paying €75–105 for the package. The Fortress concert trades the finest hall for the finest view, up in Hohensalzburg castle with the funicular included; choose it when the setting and the panorama are as much the occasion as the music. The Residence concert is the budget-and-time option: a 45-minute Mozart recital, from around €27, in the palace where he premiered his Violin Concerto K.219 — ideal for a tight schedule or a first classical concert with children.
Travelling with children, or short on time
For younger children, a seated hour-and-forty-minute concert is a big ask. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre — famous puppet stagings of The Sound of Music or Mozart's Magic Flute — is the family pick, and the 45-minute Residence recital is the gentlest way to give an older child a real taste of live Mozart. Mirabell does welcome concert-ready children and offers reduced child tickets, so it comes down to whether your child will happily sit through the full concert.
The verdict
If you take one thing from this: Mirabell is the choice for the concert, St Peter for a dinner evening, the Fortress for the view, the Residence for a cheap short taster, and the Marionettes for children. There is no wrong answer — only the one that fits the night you actually want.
